For Melaney Williams, some of the best memories basketball has given her have little to do with individual awards. From building bonds with teammates that turned into family to the excitement of hitting a game-winning shot, the relationships and moments created through the sport are what stand out most. A Merrillville, Indiana native, Melaney attended Merrillville High School, where she competed in both basketball and track and field and earned MVP honors during her athletic career.
The 5-foot-11 forward chose Vincennes University because she immediately felt welcomed and believed VU was the right place to continue developing as both an athlete and person. Melaney enters her first season with the Trailblazers focused on becoming more consistent and helping the team compete for a championship, with hopes of continuing her basketball career at the next level. She says positive feedback motivates her, while her time at VU has already taught her to stay tough when things get difficult. She also wears her jersey number in honor of her sister, adding a special personal meaning each time she takes the court.
Away from basketball, Melaney is studying Kinesiology and hopes to one day become a detective. She enjoys seafood, listening to Rod Wave and following basketball, with Ja Morant among her favorite athletes. Her dream car is a Dodge SRT, and Japan is a destination she would love to visit. While people may initially think she is mean when they first meet her, one thing Melaney says people may not realize is just how much she loves basketball. Her advice to younger athletes reflects the mindset she brings with her to Vincennes: stay focused and don't give up.
Coach Johnson on Melaney...
"Melaney is a skilled and poised young player who brings a calmness to the game that you don’t always see from a freshman. She has a great feel for basketball and the ability to make plays with confidence. I’m excited to watch her continue to grow, find her voice, and make her impact on our program this season."
